This ash veneer bedside table is built on a structure of solid ash legs and frame, with the front lacquered in grey-white, and the combination is what gives it character. Pale timber surrounds a painted face, so the piece is neither entirely wooden nor entirely painted, and the grey-white sits close enough to the ash tone to feel calm rather than contrasting. At 50 cm wide and 58.4 cm tall it is compact, suiting a smaller bedroom or a side of the bed that is tight against a wall or a radiator.

The drawers use a push-to-open mechanism, which is why the lacquered front is unbroken by handles: press and the drawer releases, press again and it closes. On a painted surface that matters more than on timber, because handles are exactly where a lacquered finish wears first. Adjustable legs let you level the table on an uneven floor, keeping the drawer fronts sitting square within the frame and the push catches engaging cleanly.

Lacquer, Ash and Looking After Both

Two materials mean two kinds of care. The lacquered front is a sealed surface: clean it with a soft damp cloth and dry it, and avoid solvent cleaners or abrasive creams, which will dull the sheen in a patch that is impossible to blend back. The solid ash legs and frame want a dry cloth and steady humidity, since solid timber moves with the seasons whilst the lacquer does not. Keeping the table away from a radiator prevents the two from arguing with each other over a winter.
